Day 1 Produces Excitement and Upsets!

Day 1 of the AAAA Provincials produced some upsets and excitement as the pre-tournament rankings were toppled by strong performances from unexpected challengers.
Drama unfolded in Pool A when #11 ranked Lord Byng upset #1 Earl Marriott with a 25-20, 28-26 victory. The win was the first ever at a Provincial Volleyball Championship for Lord Byng, who also is appearing in their first Provincial Volleyball Championship in the school's history. Then #13 ranked Semiahmoo defeated both Oak Bay (#7) and Lord Byng while falling to Marriot to finish 2nd place in the pool. When the dust had settled, Marriott retained #1 in Pool A with Semiahmoo 2nd followed by Oak Bay in 3rd and Lord Byng in 4th.
Pool B was the only pool to go according to plan with Mt Douglas finishing first with Mt Baker 2nd followed by Mission and Killarney in 3rd and 4th spots.
Pool C started with some excitement when #9 South Delta defeated #5 Kelowna 23-25, 25-23, 15-10. Kelowna quickly regained its composure with victories against #15 West Vancouver (25-22, 25-18) and #3 Lord Tweedsmuir (25-22, 25-22). Lord Tweedsmuir dispatched Kelowna and West Van with 2-0 victories to set up a 3 way tie for first place in Pool C. The tie breaking rules left Kelowna in first place followed by Lord Tweedsmuir, South Delta and West Van.
The excitement in Pool D began with #10 Belmont beating #6 Seaquam 23-25, 25-16, 15-4 and then dispatching #4 Handsworth 26-24, 25-18. Belmont completed its sweep of Pool D with a 2-0 win over North Peace. Handsworth was solid in its wins over North Peace 25-13, 25-10 and Seaquam 25-23, 25-17 to finish 2nd in the pool, with Seaquam retaining 3rd place and North Peace finishing 4th.
Actions continues with the first round of playoffs starting at 10am at Handsworth and West Vancouver Secondary Schools.
