Semiahmoo celebrates quarter-final win!
Action in Day 2 of the AAAA Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships results in the two finalists from last year's provincials - defending champion Handsworth and silver medalist Earl Marriott (ranked #1 this year) - facing off against the 2 wild card qualifiers in Semiahmoo (ranked #13) and Belmont (#10).
The action was fast and furious in Day 2 of the AAAA Provincials, with the Final Four now being set. Defending champion Handsworth started the day with a round-of-16 win over a feisty Oak Bay team 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 then advanced to the semi-finals defeating Kelowna with a 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14). Handsworth will now face Semiahmoo in one of the semi-finals at 11am at Handsworth Secondary.
Number 1 ranked Earl Marriott had an easy time disposing of North Peace 3-0 in its first match today 25-10, 25-10, 25-9 then was pressed by a tough Mt Baker team from Castlegar in a 3-1 thriller (25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23). Marriott will face off against #10 ranked Belmont also at 11am at Handsworth.
Day 2 required #13 ranked Semiahmoo to go the full distance in defeating #6 ranked Seaquam 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-21,25-27, 21-19) then upset #2 ranked Mt Douglas from Victoria 3-2 (25-20, 10-25, 22-25, 25-23, 17-15), showing they are more than worthy of the semi-final matchup against Handsworth on the final day's semi-final.
Belmont started today with a 3-0 victory over Lord Byng, then triumphed over Lord Tweedsmuir with a 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 15-8 victory in the quarter-finals. Belmont experiened a roller-coaster season, spending most of the year ranked at #1 before a spate of injuries forced them to qualify as a wild card entrant to the provincials. Now with a healthy squad, Belmont promises to give Earl Marriott a significant challenge in their semi-final match up at 11am at Handsworth.
